“TPP AND INDIA: LESSONS FOR FUTURE GAINS”,
|
Greetings from Brookings India!
We are especially delighted and proud to announce the following two ventures this month:
The release of a book on the 1991 economic reforms “India Transformed: 25 Years of Economic Reforms“, edited by Rakesh Mohan, a Brookings India Distinguished Fellow and one who was closely associated with the Indian economic reforms process since the late 1980s.
Contributors to the book are Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Mukesh Ambani, Sanjaya Baru, Jaimini Bhagwati, Laveesh Bhandari, Rama Bijapurkar, Vinayak Chatterjee, Tarun Das, Diva Dhar, Naushad Forbes, R Gopalakrishnan, Omkar Goswami, Ashok Gulati, Baba Kalyani, Devesh Kapur, Sarwar Lateef, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Vikram Singh Mehta, Shivshankar Menon, Sunil Bharti Mittal, Rakesh Mohan, Nachiket Mor, N R Narayana Murthy, T N Ninan, Deepak Parekh, Gita Piramal, C Rangarajan, Y Venugopal Reddy, Shweta Saini, Shyam Saran, Jessica Seddon, Harsha Vardhana Singh, NK Singh, Strobe Talbott, Sandhya Venkateswaran and Martin Wolf. The book is jointly published by Brookings India and Penguin India.
The book gives a picture of the challenges and struggles, triumphs and failures of the extraordinary journey of India’s 1991 economic reforms and tells us where the country stands a quarter of a century later in a whole range of key policy areas.
The book will be released by former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on August 4, and Union Minister Shri Arun Jaitley will give a keynote address.
The second venture is the Brookings India Health Monitor by Senior Fellow Shamika Ravi that brings together real time data, research and powerful analytics of India’s healthcare sector on a common platform. The Monitor enables researchers, policy makers and the general public to access, monitor and analyse real time health measures at a highly disaggregated level. The informatics provided by the Monitor are already being used by the NITI Aayog and the Uttar Pradesh Health Ministry.
The Brookings India Health Monitor is a giant step towards democratising health data and bringing accountability to health outcomes in India.
In his working paper, “TPP and India: Lessons for Future Gains”, Executive Director and Senior Fellow Harsha Vardhana Singh writes about how the United States’ withdrawal from the TPP agreement has created space for India to use several provisions of the agreement for its own domestic reform and developing regional or multilateral initiatives.
We hope to see your continued engagement and interest in our activities, and welcome your support.
With Kind Regards,
Vikram Singh Mehta Harsha Vardhana Singh
