Forex reserves at record high of USD 361.601 bn

Continuing their rising trend, India’s foreign exchange reserves increased by 1.350 billion US Dollars to touch a record high of 361.601 billion dollars in the week to 22nd April. A RBI release said, foreign currency assets, a major part of the overall reserves, rose by 1.350 billion dollars to 337.537 billion dollars in the reporting week.
In the previous week, the reserves had had risen by 333.7 million dollars to 360.250 billion dollars. Gold reserves remained unchanged at 20.115 billion dollars in the week. India’s special drawing rights with the International Monetary Fund increased by 0.1 million dollars to 1.498 billion dollars, while the country’s reserve position with the Fund remained unchanged at 2.450 billion dollars.

SAINA LOSES TO WANG YIHAN IN SEMIFINALS OF ASIA BADMINTON C’SHIP

Saina Nehwal suffered a straight-game defeat against local favourite Yihan Wang in the semifinals of women’s singles of Asian Badminton Championship at Wuhan in China, today.
Olympic bronze medallist Saina lost 16-21 14-21 to sixth seed Wang in a 41-minute match to register her 11th defeat against the Chinese.
It was yet another semifinal finish for the World No. 8 Indian, having made it to the final four in the Swiss Grand Prix Gold, India Super Series and Malaysia Super Series Premier Open earlier in the year.
This was the last tournament before the Olympic qualification deadline of May 3rd.

Panama govt sets up panel to clean up country’s financial system

The government of Panama has set up a committee of independent experts to make recommendations on cleaning up the country’s financial system. The move comes after leaks of documents from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca caused an international uproar over offshore accounts.
President Juan Carlos Varela called for the review after the Panama Papers leak suggested rich foreigners were using the accounts to hide their wealth. He was speaking at the committee’s inauguration yesterday. Mr Varela said, their administration is committed to bullet-proofing Panama financial services sector against threats from people and groups who want to use it for illegal activities.
The advisory group includes Nobel economics laureate Joseph Stiglitz, former Panamanian President Nicolas Ardito Barletta and former Panama Canal administrator Alberto Aleman Zubieta. The group is to present recommendations to Mr Varela in six months.

Six storey building collapses in Nairobi

Six story Building collapse in Nairobi in Kenya the concrete building buries nearly 40-60 after the rain.Army and Red cross helping with fire people to extradite trapped one with salvage work. Kenya, a six storey building has collapsed in a residential area of the capital Nairobi as heavy rain plays havoc across the country. At least three people have died. Many people have been pulled from the rubble alive.
Rescue workers are digging through wreckage amid what the Red Cross called chaotic scenes. It is not known how many people are trapped. The rainfall has caused landslides, washed away houses and flooded roads.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today said UPA must answer who received kickbacks in AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal. Briefing media, the Minister said the main question is who received the bribe. He said Italian High Court equivalent had clearly said that political corruption was 15.8 million euros, which amounts to 125 crore rupees.
Meanwhile, Congress has accused BJP of lying and misleading people in the AgustaWestland deal scam. Briefing media in New Delhi, party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala asked why NDA government gave protection to AgustaWestland and Finmeccanica for the last two years. He said smear campaigns by BJP cannot cover up the fact that BJP helped AgustaWestland.
In the AgustaWestland VVIP choppers deal case CBI begins questioning Air Marshal (Rtd) J.S. Gujral at its headquarters in New Delhi. Gujral, who has earlier been examined as a witness in the case, was asked by the agency to come for questioning in the case. He who retired as deputy chief of air staff, was in charge of procurements.
CBI has also called former Air chief S P Tyagi for questioning on Monday. The Milan Court of Appeals, equivalent of Indian high courts, has given details of how alleged bribes were paid by helicopter maker Finmeccanica and AgustaWestland to Indian officials through middlemen to clinch the deal. The order mentions the name of Tyagi at several points.

In West Bengal, voting is currently on for 53 Assembly seats amid tight security. Till 11 AM today, 38.30 voters turnout has been recorded. The fifth phase polling includes 31 constituencies in 24 Parganas Dakshin, 18 in Hooghly and four in Kolkata Dakshin.
In Kolkata, Police today recovered three crude bombs from a hidden spot in Keyatala area. The Police and Central force personnel apprehended several outsiders, reportedly from near a number of booths in Kolkata Port areas.
The Commission replaced some faulty EVMs at booths in Jadavpur and at Charuchandra College at Bhabanipur in Kolkata Dakshin, Canning Purba in 24-Parganas Dakshin and Haripal in Hooghly.
Following media-reports of the opposition polling agents’ intimidation, Election Commission has directed district authorities to take prompt action in all complaints.
Meanwhile the Election Commission has directed the authorities to file an F I R against the TMC candidate from Satgachhia, Sonali Guha for trying to rig the polls and intimidating polling staff and security forces.
Earlier, the Commission had asked for a report from the 24-Parganas Dakshin DM on Mrs. Guha’s conduct in today’s polling. She allegedly gave a call to party workers to beat out opposition agents from polling stations. Overall the polling is reported peaceful.
