Objectivities brings artists David KogaFelicity Nove, and Ann Marie Rousseau together for a three person exhibition exploring painting in several dimensions: on the one hand, as an object in and of itself, on the other as a concept untethered to specific materials. The works in this exhibition delay a finality of form or media, foregrounding processes that remain in flux, while still producing an abstract composition that is ultimately visually absorbing.
Felicity Nove and Ann Marie Rousseau, for their part, begin with painting or mark-making. For Rousseau this comes out of, as she describes it, her “deep interest in line in all its manifestations - drawn, painted, photographed.” Felicity Nove, meanwhile, applies paint by pouring it directly on aluminum panel. The paint is pooled, directed or allowed to find its own path. Both artists coat the final form in resin, emphasizing the object-hood of the work, and effacing its subjective and gestural traces.

Working in the opposite direction is Dave Koga, who begins with Polaroid photographs. Through a multi-step process, Koga lends the developing emulsion a painterly quality, allowing the work to occupy a space between painting and photography, while commenting on photography’s historical and ongoing relationship to painting.

Together these artists demonstrate the continued relevance of painting as a medium, idea, and inspiration.
