GAIL Information on fire incident in South Delhi
Information Update: 1745 hrs on 16/1/2015
New Delhi, January 16, 2015. Restoration work of the damaged pipeline section where a fire had broken out today morning in South Delhi is proceeding at a fast pace. The pipeline section has been purged with nitrogen and thus the area has been made safe for undertaking repair work. The restoration work is expected to be complete in next 24 hours.
Supply to domestic consumers has not been affected. All consumers including Maruti plant are receiving normal gas supplies, except some commercial and industrial consumers of IGL and a few CNG stations.
The affected pipeline was protected and covered by a steel casing pipe and located almost at a depth of 1.75 meters. Besides, there were pipeline warning markers in close vicinity. In spite of all this protection, the third party drilling activity, undertaken without any prior intimation / permission of GAIL, punctured the pipeline causing leakage and fire.
GAIL is also once again taking up with all civic agencies reiterating the advice that no digging work should be undertaken by them or their contractors without taking permission from GAIL. As a long term pre-emptive measure, GAIL would undertake awareness activities to educate and sensitize the general public about the safety aspects related to gas pipelines.

AAP announces its blueprint for resettlement colonies

17012015

  • Ownership rights will be transferred to plot owners from govt
Friday, January 16, 2015
Aam Aadmi Party on Friday presented its vision for around 15 lakh residents of 45 resettlement colonies in Delhi.
It is shocking that the problems of resettlement colonies have remained unsolved since many decades.
In 1958, the government had appointed a committee to investigate the problems of growth and existence of jhuggies in urban Delhi. During the next several years about 45 resettlement colonies were developed by DDA, established mostly during the 1970s.
Many such committees, notifications, solutions and schemes have been constituted repeatedly but none of the problems of Delhi’s resettlement colonies have ever been solved.
And yet, legally these properties continue to be under the ownership of Government of India and the occupants have no claim of these properties. While the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) was formed to give free-hold rights to the owners, this has still remained a distant dream.
Former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal made the following announcements at the event :
  • Occupants of land pay lakhs of rupees to get hold of their own land! AAP will simplify procedures.
  • In resettlement colonies, free hold rights/ ownership of land will be granted to occupants in three months.
  • Original allottees will receive ownership of their plots within one month for just Rs. 10,000.
  • Other land occupants who are not original allottees will receive their plots in less than Rs. 50,000.
  • The cumbersome multi-page form will be simplified into a single page form
The AAP leaders also underlined the fact that sanitation and sewer facilities do not exist in half of resettlement colonies. This issue will also be given priority.

7 UBA All India Inter University Basketball Tournament for Men Day 5-

17012015
#7 UBA All India Inter University Basketball Tournament for Men Day 5- Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune & University of Madras, Chennai join Jain Bengaluru and Sathyabama in semis
Chennai, 16th January 2015: Bharati Vidyapeeth University, Pune beat Jamia Millia Islamia University, Delhi earlier this evening to go through to the semifinals of the UBA All India Inter University Basketball Tournament for Men 2014-15. The Delhi team got off to a good start with their best player, Manu Babu, driving past the Pune defence with relative ease to finish at the rim. Jamia’s big man, Harsh Malik, contributed with points in the paint for his team, bruising his way against the Pune defence.
The second quarter, however, belonged to Bharati Vidyapeeth as they tightened their defence and forced turnovers against the Jamia team. Pune’s Kapil Gaikwad and their captain, Akshay Bhosale, were the main contributors draining shots from the inside and outside. Pune’s excellent ball movement was on full display as they managed to find the open man on the offensive end. On the other hand, Jamia’s offense came majorly from isolation plays from Manu Babu who had 30 points and Harsh Malik who had 22 points and 13 rebounds in the game. The contrast in the offensive styles was apparent in the number of team assists – Jamia had only 2 total assists, while Bharati Vidyapeeth had 17 total assists in the game.
There were only three points separating the teams at the end of three quarters with Bharati Vidyapeeth leading 64 to 61. The Pune team pulled away in the fourth and held their nerve and the lead despite a furious late comeback attempt by Jamia. Pune’s Kapil Gaikwad ended up with a game-high 35 points and he also had 11 rebounds. Captain Akshay Bhosle had 23 points and 8 rebounds, while Pune’s point guard had a good all-round game with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Bharati Vidyapeeth registered a 94-84 victory and will face the home team, Sathyabama University, in the semi-finals to be held this Sunday.
In the last quarterfinal of the tournament, University of Madras comprehensively beat Bharathiar University, Coimbatore in a one-sided affair. Familiar with Bharathiar’s game having already beaten them earlier in the South Zone rounds, Madras had no trouble outscoring their state opponents in each of the four quarters, but their main takeaway came from their defensive work in the second quarter when they restricted Bharathiar to just five points. Centre Jeevanatham P, who is also on the senior Tamil Nadu state team, dominated proceedings on both ends of the floor for Madras University, notching up a double double of 16 points and 14 rebounds. To the delight of the crowd, he also had an in-game dunk.
University of Madras, Chennai will now face Jain University, Bengaluru, while Bharati Vidyapeet, Pune will take on Sathyabama University, Chennai, in the semifinals that will be played on 18th January 2015.

Quarterfinal Results

Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon on Sunday

17012015
Lalita Babbar & Karan Singh confident of defending titles at the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon on Sunday

Mumbai: Lalita Babar and Karan Singh, the women and men’s winners last year sounded very excited on their prospects of defending their crowns at this year’s Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon, which will be flagged off on Sunday, January 18. The two were also very thrilled about the announcement made by TCS to sponsor the Indian (male and female) Elite runners who finish in the first and second positions.

The 25-year-old Lalita, three times winner of the Mumbai Marathon, said that she would like to first focus on the Mumbai Marathon before thinking about the New York race. “First I want to do well in the Mumbai Marathon and only after that I will think about New York. I have trained hard and I am confident of another good performance here on Sunday,” Lalita stated.
Lalita pointed out that the weather would also be a major factor.

Karan Singh from the Army Institute of Sports, Pune, who won in a time of 2:24.08 last year, said that he, too, has prepared well and is determined to retain his title. “After the Asian Games last September, I have trained for the last couple of months and hope to do well to win again and with a better timing” said Karan.

When informed that Ram Singh Yadav, winner of the 2012 Mumbai Marathon would also be in the fray this year Karan said that it would be good for the race. “It’s nice that Yadav will also be running here in Mumbai. He will be a strong competitor which is good for the event,” he added.

Meanwhile, AFI President, Adille Sumariwalla mentioned that this event would be a pre-qualification event for the World Championships in Beijing to be held in August this year. “The Mumbai Marathon will be the pre-qualification event for the Indian athletes who will be participating in the World Athletic Championships to be held in Beijing in August,” said Sumariwalla.
“The qualification timing for men is 2:18 and 2:44 for women,” he added.
Mr. Paco Borao, President of AIMS (Association of International Marathons & Distance Races), was pleased to come to India for the Mumbai marathon. “Running a marathon is a good sport for everyone and it’s easily accessible to anyone. Running is simple, you don’t require much equipment and all that is needed is a good pair of running shoes. The sport is growing and people are happy running,” said Borao, who is here in Mumbai on his first visit.
Rashpal Singh of Sikh Regiment, Jabalpur Centre who finished second last year, said that he will put up a better performance this time. “I am happy to run this Mumbai Marathon and I hope to win this race and break the previous record of 2:16.59 secs set in 2012 by Ram Singh Yadav,” said Rashpal.
Another strong contender for the men’s title is Ratiram Saini from Rajasthan who is keen to make a mark in Mumbai Marathon. “This is my first marathon run and will give it my best shot. I have set goals and my target is to register my name in the record books,” said a modest Saini.

Meanwhile, O.P. Jaisha from Kerala, a veteran Indian athlete is keen to make an attempt on winning the women’s event. “I have participated in the 5,000 metres before but I will be running the Marathon for the first time. I will go flat out and try to finish at the top,” mentioned Jaisha.
