Asian Games 2014 Medals Tally

It was time to formally close 2014 Incheon Asian Games with important symbolic ceremonies that signify respect among nations. Host nation’s flag (above) of South Korea entered the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium.

17th Asian Games comes to a close today with a Closing ceremony this evening. China dominated the Gold medal count in the quadrennial extravaganza with a tally of 151 Gold medals, well ahead of 79 Gold by hosts South Korea and the 47 Gold medals won by third placed Japan.
For India, it was a mixed Asian Games campaign. The medal count went down but Indian sports still had lots to celebrate with the men’s Hockey team coming good after a long time striking the coveted Gold. M C Mary Kom made the nation proud by becoming the first Indian woman boxer to win Asian Games Gold.
Pistol shooter Jitu Rai and freestyle grappler Yogeshwar Dutt were among the other heroes of the Games. Other memorable victories were the Gold medal wins by tennis mixed doubles pair of Sania Mirza and Saket Myneni, Woman Discus thrower Seema Punia and the 4×400 metre Indian Women’s relay team. The compound archers also shot their way to a historic first-ever Gold by clinching the Men’s team title at the expense of hosts South Korea.
Overall, the huge Indian contingent fell short of the target and secured 11 Gold, 10 Silver and 36 Bronze. The Gold medal haul also placed India in the eighth position on the medals table, two rungs below where they had finished in China. At the end of it all competitions, the 541-strong Indian sporting contingent has once again secured the top 10 place out of the same number of nations and regions.
Indian Chef de Mission Adille Sumariwalla summed up the Indian overall show, saying the final medal haul was on expected lines.
