Tony – Modi signs nuclear deal

6092014

The decks for the import of uranium by India have been cleared with India and Australia inking a pact on civil nuclear energy deal. The pact was signed in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Tony Abbott in New Delhi this evening.
The nuclear deal will form a high point in the ongoing transformation of India-Australia relations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the signing of the nuclear deal as a historic step and a new chapter in the Indo-Australian relations. In his opening remarks, Mr Modi said, both the countries agreed to further deepen bilateral relations.
He said, Australia is India’s important strategic partner and can play a pivotal role in its development. He said there is enormous scope of cooperation in manufacturing and infrastructure sectors.
Mr Modi said India and Australian must prioritize promoting peace and prosperity in the India Ocean and Asia Pacific region. Mr Modi said, both the sides will strengthen their economic relationship and India welcomes Australian investment.
He said, India and Australia will increase their security cooperation to counter terrorism, cyber threats and other security challenges. The two sides agreed on bilateral maritime exercise to be next year.
The Australian Prime Minster Tony Abbott said, his country signed the nuclear deal with New Delhi as it trusts India to do the right thing in this area. Mr Abbott acknowledged India as emerging democratic superpower.
AIR correspondent reports, the efforts to sign civil nuclear deal were underway since 2012 after Labour party in Australia reversed its decision to ban the sale of uranium to India because of New Delhi not being a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, NPT.
The negotiations took place on uranium sales after Canberra lifted a long-time ban on exporting the valuable ore to Delhi to meet its ambitious nuclear energy programme.
India is not a signatory to the NPT, but Austrialian Prime Minister Abbott has stressed that Australia will ensure adequate bilateral safeguards. After the failure to conclude a civil nuclear deal with Japan during Modi’s visit to that country, the pact with Australia will boost India’s energy sector.
Australia has about a third of the world’s recoverable uranium resources and exports nearly seven thousand tonnes of it a year.
Official correspondent reports that three other agreements were signed in the areas of water resources management, sports and technical and vocational education and Training.

Your Excellency, Prime Minister Tony Abbott,

WHEN: Monday, September 08, 2014, 4:00 PM
WHERE: 66 W 12th St., 7nd Fl. (room 712 Orozco), New York, NY
Renowned sinologist and social theorist, Arif Dirlik, will be giving a talk entitled Crisis and Criticism: the Predicament of Global Modernity.
“That we are living through a time of unprecedented crisis is widely acknowledged. What is less certain is whether this crisis is one of the crises endemic to the capitalist world system, an outcome of systemic transformations at work that suggest an impending hegemonic shift (with the People’s Republic of China [PRC] as the up-and-coming claimant), or a terminal crisis that signals the collapse of life as we know it as unbridled capitalist development in its various competing versions runs up against the ecological limitations of the earth.”
Arif Dirlik was on the faculty at Duke University and more recently was the Knight Professor of Social Science at the University of Oregon. He has published extensively on the formation of the Chinese Communist Party, the history of Chinese anarchism, and post-colonial globalism. Some of his published works include:Revolution and History: Origins of Marxist Historiography in China, 1919-1937, University of California Press;Anarchism in the Chinese Revolution, University of California Press; Postmodernism and China, Duke University Press; and Global Modernity: Modernity in the Age of Global Capitalism, Paradigm Press.

UNCTAD: GREATER POLICY AMBITION NEEDED TO ADVANCE POST-2015 DEVELOPMENT AGENDA AND SET THE GLOBAL ECONOMY IN RIGHT DIRECTION

  • The ‘new normal’ in advanced countries is neither new nor normal and risks repeating

    • past policy mistakes

  • Developing countries need sufficient space to make macro and industrial policies work effectively to support structural transformation
  • International and national action needed to combat tax evasion and avoidance
  • Multilateral institutions need to focus on promoting the public interest as much as boosting market confidence and reducing financial risksUNCTAD’s Trade and Development Report 2014 examines the health of the global economy and asks whether current conditions and policies are fit to sustain growth and support an ambitious development agenda after 2015. It calls for more policy coordination at the global level and more policy and fiscal space for developing countries to pursue an inclusive and sustainable trade and development agenda.Subtitled Global Governance and Policy Space for Development, the report also reflects on the seventieth anniversary of the Bretton Woods Conference and the fiftieth anniversary of UNCTAD, and their efforts to make multilateralism more inclusive.RSVP:unic.india@unic.org; Phone: 46532242

JAITLEY URGED TO FORM COMMITTEE FOR FINANCIAL ARCHITECTURE

5092014
JAITLEY URGED TO FORM COMMITTEE FOR FINANCIAL ARCHITECTURE FOR NON CORPORATE SECTOR

In a communication sent today to Union Finance Minister Mr. Arun Jaitley, the Action Committee For Formal Finance For Non Corporate Sector has urged him that in pursuance of his announcement made in the Union Budget for providing financial architecture for non corporate sector, the Joint Committee of Ministry of Finance, Ministry of MSME and RBI may be formed immediately. The Action Committee has said that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has already initiated process of financial inclusion  with inauguration of Pradhanmantri Jan Dhan Yojna on 29th August and in line of the same the financial inclusion of non corporate sector shall prove to be a further big and constructive step of the Government.

Mr. Praveen Khandelwal, National Coordinator of the Action Committee in his communication to Mr. Jaitley has also urged him to include representatives from non corporate sector and banking & financial experts so that the said Committee may study the ground relaties and also the participation of non corporate sector in drawing financial architecture is ensured.

It is remembered that Mr. Jaitley in Para 102 of his budget speech said that SMEs form the backbone of our Economy. There is a need to examine the financial architecture for this sector and in this regard he proposed to appoint a Committee with representatives from Finance Ministry, MSME Ministry and RBI to give concrete suggestions in three months.

The Action Committee has lauded the announcement of the Finance Minister since for the first time any Government has officially spelled out importance of the non corporate sector and has announced concrete steps for its financial inclusion. The non corporate sector consisting of Traders, Transporters, Truck Operators, SMEs, Self Employed Groups, Hawkers, Women Entrepreneurs and other sections is providing employment to about 46 crore people in the Country. If a viable financial architecture is given to this sector, its present contribution of 45% to national GDP can rise to any extent. Further in such an event the domestic exports will get a boost which will help in curtailing the current account deficit.

The non corporate sector of the Country compliment Shri Jaitley for such a landmark step and assure its utmost cooperation to the Government in designing a strong financial architecture for non corporate Sector.

‘On Being Familiar:
The vitalism of Frederick Salmon Growse’s architectural improvement of Bulandshahr 1878-1886’

by
Dr. Venugopal Maddipati,
Former Fellow, NMML.
Abstract:
Paradoxes abound in Frederick Salmon Growse’s (1837 — 1893) text titled Indian Architecture of Today as Exemplified in the New Buildings of the Bulandshahr District(1886). On the one hand, Growse, the then district collector of Bulandshahr, wrote inIndian Architecture of Today… about his intimacy with the architectural fabric of the towns of the district. As is evident in the photographs and the texts accompanying them in Indian Architecture of Today…, Growse sought an adequate representational measure of his own familiarity with the architecture of the towns of the Bulandshahr district.  On the other hand, even as Growse wrote about his familiarity with the architecture of the towns of the district, he also simultaneously projected himself as an indissociable aspect of the very world with which he was familiar. Indeed, the very bearer of feelings of intimacy was himself constituted, as an architectural agency, in the very heart of his own intimacy.  How, then, did Growse become a part of the very world of people and objects that he strove to see? How did the person who sensed become the sensible in Indian architecture of Today…? How, in essence, does one project oneself as an integral bodily part into the very space of the body that one envisages? In this study, then, the speaker strives to explore how the politics of district governance in the latter part of the nineteenth century, or, more specifically, the short duration of collectors’ administerial tenures, provided the very grounds for the emergence of Growse’s difficult and tortuous double vision. More significantly, the talk examines how Growse’s comprehension of Indian architecture as a living, vital art began to have a bearing on his conception of the part he had played in the improvement of the town of Bulandshahr, how Vitalism as an architectural discourse drew Growse into difficult debates on the nature of his own presence within the spaces of the towns of Bulandshahr and Khurja.

Speaker:
Dr. Venugopal Maddipati, an architectural historian, is assistant professor at the School of Design, Ambedkar University, Delhi. He received his B-Arch at the School of Planning and Architecture in Delhi and an M.A. and a PhD. in art history at the Department of Art History at the University of Minnesota. He is particularly interested in the architecture of Islamicate societies and nineteenth and twentieth century philosophies of temporality, hospitality, organicism and urban evolution. He has also published essays on themes such as temporality and coercion, in late twentieth century and contemporary art and architecture. He is currently working on a monograph on Gandhi, architecture and ecology in Wardha and an edited volume, with Dr. Sugata Ray at the University of California, Berkeley, on water systems and spatiality in South Asia. He initially worked as an artist and continues to paint.

New global data expose acute prevalence of violence against children: UNICEF

5092014
NEW YORK, 4 September 2014 – The largest-ever compilation of data on violence against children shows the staggering extent of physical, sexual and emotional abuse — and reveals the attitudes that perpetuate and justify violence, keeping it ‘hidden in plain sight’ in every country and community in the world.

“These are uncomfortable facts — no government or parent will want to see them,” said UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake. “But unless we confront the reality each infuriating statistic represents — the life of a child whose right to a safe, protected childhood has been violated — we will never change the mindset that violence against children is normal and permissible.  It is neither. “
The UNICEF report “Hidden in Plain Sight” draws on data from 190 countries, documenting violence in places where children should be safe: their communities, schools and homes. It details the lasting, often inter-generational effects of violence, finding that exposed children are more likely to become unemployed, live in poverty and be violent towards others. The authors note that the data is derived only from individuals who were able and willing to respond, and therefore represent minimum estimates.

Major findings include:
  • Sexual violence: Around 120 million girls under the age of 20 worldwide (about 1 in 10) have experienced forced intercourse or other forced sexual acts, and one in 3 ever-married adolescent girls aged 15 to 19 (84 million) have been victims of emotional, physical or sexual violence committed by their husbands or partners. The prevalence of partner violence is 70 per cent or higher in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Equatorial Guinea, and approaches or exceeds 50 per cent in Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania and Zimbabwe. In Switzerland, a 2009 national survey of girls and boys aged 15 to 17 found that 22 per cent and 8 per cent, respectively, had experienced at least one incident of sexual violence involving physical contact. The most common form of sexual violence for both sexes was cyber-victimization.
  • Homicide: One fifth of homicide victims globally are children and adolescents under the age of 20, resulting in about 95,000 deaths in 2012. Homicide is the leading cause of death among males between 10 and 19 years old in Panama, Venezuela, El Salvador, Trinidad and Tobago, Brazil, Guatemala and Colombia. Nigeria has the highest number of child homicides – 13,000. Among countries in Western Europe and North America, the United States has the highest homicide rate.
  • Bullying: Slightly more than 1 in 3 students between the ages of 13 and 15 worldwide are regularly bullied in school; in Samoa, the proportion is almost 3 in 4. Almost a third of students 11 to 15 years old in Europe and North America report bullying others – in Latvia and Romania, nearly 6 in 10 admit to bullying others.
  • Violent discipline: About 17 per cent of children in 58 countries are subject to severe forms of physical punishment (hitting on the head, ears or face or hitting hard and repeatedly). Over 40 per cent of children 2 to 14 years old experience severe physical punishment in Chad, Egypt and Yemen. Globally, three in 10 adults believe physical punishment is needed to raise children well. In Swaziland, 82 per cent say physical punishment is necessary.
Attitudes towards violence: Close to half of all adolescent girls aged 15 to 19 (around 126 million) believe a husband is justified in hitting his wife under certain circumstances. The proportion rises to 80 per cent or more in Afghanistan, Guinea, Jordan, Mali and Timor-Leste. In 28 of 60 countries with data on both sexes, a larger proportion of girls than boys believe that wife-beating is sometimes justified. In Cambodia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Rwanda and Senegal, girls are around twice as likely as boys to think a husband is sometimes justified in hitting his wife . Data from 30 countries suggest that about seven in 10 girls 15-19 years old who had been victims of physical and/or sexual abuse had never sought help: many said they did not think it was abuse or did not see it as a problem.

UNICEF points to six strategies to enable society as a whole, from families to governments, to prevent and reduce violence against children. They include supporting parents and equipping children with life skills; changing attitudes; strengthening judicial, criminal and social systems and services; and generating evidence and awareness about violence and its human and socio-economic costs, in order to change attitudes and norms.

“Violence against children occurs every day, everywhere.  And while it harms individual children the most, it also tears at the fabric of society — undermining stability and progress.   But violence against children is not inevitable. It is preventable — if we refuse to let violence remain in the shadows,” Lake said.  “The evidence in this report compels us to act — for the sake of those individual children and the future strength of societies around the world.”

About the #ENDViolence initiative:
UNICEF launched the initiative on 31 July 2013 to urge collective action to end violence against children, highlighting the fact that violence is everywhere, but often happens out of sight or is tolerated due to social and cultural norms. Under the banner ‘Make the invisible, visible’, the initiative aims to raise awareness as a first step toward modifying attitudes, behaviours and policies. The initiative also supports efforts to build evidence of what works, and reinforces the idea that violence can be prevented by highlighting successful efforts and movements at all levels of society. Some 70 countries from every region of the world have formally joined #ENDviolence, strengthening efforts to identify, track and report violence against children in all its forms.

About UNICEF:
UNICEF promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child, in everything we do.  Together with our partners, we work in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into practical action, focusing special effort on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere.  For more information about UNICEF and its work visit: www.unicef.org

India-ASEAN boosting connectivity

5092014

New Delhi—5 September 2014: India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will intensify efforts to improve institutional and physical connectivity with ASEAN to further economic integration with the region and beyond.
With its “Look East Policy,” India hopes to forge closer economic relations with ASEAN and East Asia through domestic reforms that would facilitate trade and investment. However, the people-to-people connectivity is equally pivotal to strengthen the multidimensional cooperation.
These were the sentiments echoed during the one-day symposium to enhance India’s competitiveness and its linkage with East Asia was attended by senior Indian official and experts from India and ASEAN.
The symposium, the first organized jointly by the Indian Government and ERIA (Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia), was opened with a key-note speaker by H.E.Nguyen Cam Tu, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Viet Nam.

Paesaggi di oggi e di ieri, filmati d’archivio e musiche elettroniche, terre vicine e lontane fanno da sfondo a una lingua inventata, né italiano né dialetto, musicale ed espressiva come quella di un cantastorie./Vincenzo Rabito, an illiterate Sicilian, a striking storyteller, through a blend of imaginary, musical language – neither Italian nor dialect, recounts Italian twentieth century history through thousands of dictated, tightly written, rope-bound pages, tracing the extremes of a century marked by poverty and economic boom, disgrace and redemption.  Sharing their dream, Rabito gives an impassioned and unique autobiographical perspective on a complicated part of Italian history.

Rani Mukerji visits anti-sex trafficking NGO, Apne Aap, chats with survivors, and supports Apne Aap campaign for protection of frontline anti-trafficking activists

New Delhi, September 4, 2014: Bollywood star Rani Mukerji today visited victims, survivors and girls and women at risk to prostitution at the New Delhi office of anti trafficking NGO, Apne Aap Women Worldwide.
Responding to an invitation by Apne Aap survivor activist Fatima, Rani Mukerji changed her schedule to meet with the girls and women. The Bollywood star had met Fatima Khatoon at the KBC show where she helped her win Rs. 25 lakh.
“I have invited Rani Mukerji to help publicise my appeal to Indian government. I beg the Indian Government to protect me from the traffickers. I have received seven death threats from them after I spoke against sex-trafficking in KBC. Earlier, when I exposed a trafficking ring in Forbesganj, Bihar, a corrupt police officer picked up my 14-year-old daughter and kept her in police custody all night. They also arrested my colleague on false charges. I appeal to the government to drop the false charges against my colleague. I ask police to become honest like Rani ji in Mardaani,” said Fatima Khatoon.
Rani Mukerji while interacting with media personnel in the press conference said, “I was always sensitive towards this issue but after doing this film, I have got more attached and emotional towards the cause of fighting against human trafficking. Today, when I interacted with the girls here, I was extremely touched when they said that they also want to do something big in life and they too want to be a ‘Mardaani’ like me. I am happy that my film has touched the right chord. And I appeal to all the journalists to take the issue forward.”
Rani Mukerji also posed for a Facebook selfie and asked others to join the Apne Aap campaign ‘Cool Men Don’t Buy Sex’.
Ruchira Gupta founder of Apne Aap thanked Rani Mukerji for her support. “Rani is the first Bollywood star who has taken the trouble to involve trafficking survivors in the spin-of-publicity from her movie, Mardaani,” said Ruchira Gupta. Mardaani is based on the issue of human trafficking and Rani Mukerji has played the role of a tough cop fighting against child trafficking.
Fatima has been working with Apne Aap Women Worldwide as a survivor-leader since 2005 and has helped in rescuing 35 girls, who were trafficked into prostitution and getting traffickers arrested. Interacting with the media, during the press meet she said, “I wanted to talk about my past, to tell women not be ashamed. After all, the shame is not ours but of those who exploit us. I also wanted to talk about my present- how a struggle makes you strong. I formed a circle with other oppressed women under the banner of our anti-trafficking NGO, Apne Aap Women Worldwide (AAWW).”
The discussion highlighted the need for collective efforts to address this scourge that persists across the country.
Apne Aap women worldwide works with more than 20,000 victims ,survivors and their families to dismantle the prostitution system by increasing choices for girls and women and decreasing choices for pimps and customers.
