The nexus between the builder mafia and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is solely responsible for the collapse of a four storey building in North Delhi, which has claimed atleast 10 innocent lives.
It is unbelievable and extremely shocking that the North Delhi Municipal Corporation had shut its eyes to the digging for construction purposes going on a site adjacent to this 50 year-old building in Inderlok near Sarai Rohilla, which ultimately led to the collapse of this dilapidated structure.
The builder mafia is spreading its influence across all parts of the national capital and all the three corporations which form a part of the MCD appear to be actively conniving by allowing their illegal activities to go unchecked.
Nothing can be more shameful that the civic body which controls majority of the country’s national capital - the MCD, is today synonymous with corruption and treats the people living here with disdain and considers them to be helpless and at its mercy.
Eyewitnesses revealed horrific accounts about the activities of the builder mafia to the AAP leaders who went to the site of the building collapse.
AAP national convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, MLA from Sadar Bazar Somdutt and party leader Ashutosh spoke to the victims families and people living there.
The Aam Aadmi Party demands that the Lieutenant Governor should immediately order a judicial probe into how the building collapse took place to find out the reality and fix responsibility by ensuring exemplary punishment for those guilty of lapses that led to this unpardonable incident.
The inquiry announced by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation is meaningless and will serve no purpose since the corporation which is itself responsible for the safety of buildings in its jurisdiction cannot be expected to come out with a fair and impartial finding.
The corporation needs to answer whether the buildings in the area were inspected at all ? Whether any checks were carried out in the buildings unsafe for living ? and if so, why people living there were not shifted out ?
It is common knowledge among the residents of the national capital that the MCD is known for its inefficiency, unprofessional and its corrupt style of functioning.
It has a consistent record of miserable and multiple failures in carrying out all its duties – ranging from the basic work of maintaining cleanliness and hygiene to the specialized work of checking safety of buildings and other engineering tasks.
The LG should wake up before it is too late and should rein in these erring corporations.
