FOOD SAFETY AND STANDARDS ACT DATE DEFERRED BY UNION GOVT BIG RELIEF TO 6 CRORE TRADERS AND CITIZENS IN GENERAL CAIT HAILS THE DEFERMENT BUT FIGHT WILL CONTINUE
While accepting the demand of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), apex body of the trading community of the Country, the Union Health Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad has deferred the last date of obtaining Registration under the Food Safety and Standards Act till 4th August, 2014. The earlier last date was 4th Feburary,2014 The FSSAI has issued a notification to this extent yesterday-informed CAIT in a Press Release issued at New Delhi today. It is noteworthy that CAIT was strongly lobbying for deferment of the Act since last more than two months on account of many impracticable provisions of the said Act. The CAIT alleged that the Act has been brought to facilitate MNCs to control and dominate the food business in India.Welcoming the decision, CAIT National President Shri B. C. Bhartia and Secretary General Mr. Praveen Khandelwal in a joint statement issued here today complimented Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad for taking cognizance of the sufferings and plight of the trading community and therefore has deferred the Act. The CAIT also lauded the efforts of Union Law Minister Mr. Kapil Sibal, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Smt.Sushma Swaraj, Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, Chairman, Public Accounts Committee of Lok Sabha for taking up the trader’s issue with the Union Health Minister which has brought much relief to the trading community across the Country.
Both Mr. Bhartia and Mr. Khandelwal said that though certainly it is a big relief to traders and citizens of the Country but CAIT will continue its fight since the Act is suffered with various anomalies and disparities. The trade leaders called upon Mr. Azad to defer the Act and constitute a Joint Committee of Senior Government Officials and CAIT representatives to make an in depth study of the Act and its Rules and Regulations and to recommend the Government necessary amendments to make the Act universally accepted by all sections of the society. They informed that during a meeting with CAIT delegation on 14th January,2014, Mr. Azad did accept this proposal of the CAIT. The CAIT is holding an All India Traders Convention on 27th and 28th Feburary,2014 at New Delhi where the future strategy of a nationwide campaign on this issue will be decided.
Both Mr. Bhartia and Mr. Khandelwal said that since last more than two years, the trading community is bitterly opposing the Rules and Regulations of the said Act since the Act and its rules have been framed in keeping the interest of foreign companies which will promote ‘packed food’ in the Country and will prove much detrimental to the interests of existing food business in the Country. There are many provisions which are impossible for the domestic food business operators in the Country.
Mr. Mahendra Shah, Chairman of the CAIT said that under the Act it is provided that any such food business operator which means any institution which either with a profit motive or not , whether public or private engaged in the activities of any type of food including manufacturing, processing, packaging, storage, transportation, import, distribution of food articles or any type of food service will be treated as food business operators and are bound to obtain registration and license from the concerned department.
Both trade leaders said that under the provisions of the Act not only the person engaged in food business or even in any social functions where any kind of food articles are served will be required to obtain registration. They said that which means that even the ‘prasad’ in temple or ‘lunger’ in Gurudwara, Wedding functions or social functions like Conferences and Seminars, hawkers, street vendors etc. are also liable to obtain registration and even a minor lapse will led such people for heavy punishment including fine and imprisonment.

As a gay Olympian, I believe that the best response to mounting repression in Russia is engagement. The Sochi Winter Olympic Games is an opportunity to champion equality and human rights.
That’s why I will be at Sochi this week, working with Human Rights First to support Russians who oppose the government’s assault on LGBT rights.
President Obama took a stand for equality by naming a diverse delegation to Sochi, an unmistakable response to the horrifying anti-LGBT “propaganda” bill that President Vladimir Putin signed in June. Of the nine people on the delegation, three are openly gay or lesbian Olympians.
Urge the U.S. delegation to stand for equality by calling for the repeal of Russia’s antigay law.
The presence of LGBT members in the U.S. delegation—tennis legend Billie Jean King, skating gold medalist Brian Boitano, and women’s hockey team gold medalist Caitlin Cahow—clearly demonstrates that the United States celebrates diversity. Now the entire delegation, gay and straight, has the opportunity to show that and stand up against Russia’s crackdown on the LGBT community.
Today, so do you.

Zayed Future Energy Prize 2015 Submissions Open Today

Annual US$4 million prize rewards individuals, organisations and schools making a positive impact in the fields of renewable energy and sustainability
Delhi, 4 February, 2014 – Submissions and nominations for the 2015 Zayed Future Energy Prize opened today. The Prize, an annual US$4 million award, recognises individuals, organisations and schools who have made significant strides to advance the fields of renewable energy and sustainabilitySubmissions will open globally across five categories: Large Corporation, Small and Medium Enterprise (SME), Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Lifetime Achievement and Global High Schools. In the Lifetime Achievement category, nominations will also be accepted.

Does women’s presence make a difference?’

Abstract:
Forests in South Asia are largely state owned but a fair proportion are community governed. Women’s presence, however, has been sparse in community institutions involved in such governance, and most research on gender and forest governance has focused on women’s absence. This presentation reverses that focus to ask: what if women were present in these institutions? Would that affect the decisions made and conservation outcomes? These questions remain largely unaddressed, despite the substantial work on women’s representation in public bodies and on local environmental governance. Exploring the history of women’s absence, the speaker will then focus on the impact of their presence, using her primary data on communities managing local forests in India and Nepal to provide some answers.

Prof. Bina Agarwal is Professor of Development Economics and Environment, University of Manchester. She has been Director of the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi, and President of the International Society for Ecological Economics. She is also a member of the Future Earth Science Committee. Her nine books include the award-winning—A Field of One’s Own (Cambridge University Press)—and Gender and Green Governance (Oxford University Press, OUP). A three-volume compendium of her selected papers is also forthcoming from OUP. She holds honorary doctorates from ISS, The Hague, and the University of Antwerp. Kofi Annan to travel to India on high level visit from 5 – 9 February 2014
