In
the run-up to the Frankfurt Book Fair, this prestigious Frankfurt
Fellowship Programme focuses on information exchange, professional
dialogue and
the creation of networks between young international publishers.
First
launched to mark the 50th anniversary of the Frankfurt Book Fair in
1998, the Frankfurt Book Fair Fellowship Programme provides information
and
networking within the international publishing world. During the last
twelve years, more than 220 participants from 44 countries have gained
from this programme.
THE PROGRAMME
The
Programme gives deep insight into the German book world and brings the
Fellows to important centres of German publishing. Publishing
professionals
provide an overview of the German book market and pass their
international career experiences on to the Fellows. The Fellowship group
(approximately 15 persons) includes people from all parts of the world,
and in the 2 weeks spent together, the fellows learn
about each participant’s market and gain from each other’s experiences.
Here is what some of the Indian Frankfurt Fellows of the past years have to say about the Fellowship:
“The
fellowship was both insightful and enjoyable. It taught me a great deal
about foreign markets and I made some lifelong friends in those two
weeks.
It brings together people from all around the world so they can learn
from each other, and that’s what makes it so special. If I have a
question about, say, the Chinese market or Brazil, I will have the
answer in moments, that’s how strong our network is!”
NEELINI SARKAR, Commissioning Editor and Rights Coordinator,
HarperCollins Publishers India
“The
fellowship program gave me great insight into the publishing business
in Germany. Also, I made some great friends from the world over - we
have,
over the years, managed not just to be in touch and do business
together but also at times helped each other out with acquisitions etc. A
program that was aimed at bringing some great publishing professionals
together - demanding and satisfying in equal measure.”
SAUGATA MUKHERJEE, Publisher, Picador, Pan & Macmillan India
“The
Fellowship was an incredible experience: it helped me build a great
network of contacts and gave me a fantastic exposure to publishing in
Germany.
The other Fellows I met and travelled with for three weeks are not just
people I can speak to and learn from with regard to international
publishing, but wonderful friends now.” DEEPTHI TALWAR, Executive
Editor, Westland Publishing
“For
someone passionate about books and publishing, the Frankfurt Fellowship
is an opportunity to fall in love with books all over again, in a
country
that celebrates them. It is a fantastic way of getting to know the
German publishing industry— through personal interactions with
publishers, editors, literary agents and rights managers. The well
organized, intensive few weeks of our fellowship brought together
a diverse group of publishing professionals from around the world, who
are now friends for life. The Frankfurt Fellowship will always be one of
the most cherished experiences of my life.” VINUTHA MALLYA, Editor,
Mapin Publishers
"It
is one thing to acquire some kind of hands-on knowledge about
publishing, through work, in your own country. But it is quite another
to be exposed
to a range and diversity of publishing concepts, ambitions, styles and
strategies internationally. To me, the programme was memorable because
it made me think about the sheer potential of publishing, as work of
unlimited expressive possibility. The programme
took us to publishing giants like S. Fisher, Suhrkamp Verlag, Ulstein,
Random (Germany), to the oldest CH Beck to maverick Unkle and Unkle. It
also provided a unique time with 15 co-fellows." NANDITA BHARDWAJ,
Commissioning Editor, Rupa Publications
“I
would say, Frankfurt Fellowship molded my carrier. It exposed me to a
whole gamut of possibilities in publishing.” V C THOMAS, Editorial
Consultant,
Olive Publications
