Dr Manmohan Singh
Prime Minister of India
New Delhi

Respected Prime Minister
It is with great sadness that I read about your broken promise to
Swami Gyan Swarup Sanand (Formerly Professor G D Aggarwal of IIT Kanpur).
He had been on a fast last month regarding the Ganges and he broke it only
on your solemn promise that you would call a meeting of National Ganga
River Basin Authority ( NGRBA) on April 17 . Swami Sanand was to be a
special invitee at that meeting to present his concerns for the Ganga.
Important decisions regarding ways and means to save Ganga were expected to
be taken at that meeting and that work on all the four dams being built
on Ganga and its tributaries be halted till the meeting of NGRBA and then a
decision taken on whether to continue this or not.****
A Prime Minister who does not tell the truth or keep his word is
devastating for the country. Too much of it has , in the last few years ,
gone wrong because your word has been constantly broken . Whether to Anna
Hazareji or to any of us individually – I know that I have been assured of
things repeatedly only to not have them happen at all or even remembered by
you . But the Ganges is too important for a politician to fool around with.
This country has become a playground for the corrupt and the contractor and
I would largely put the blame , as India does , at your door. Silence is
not golden when everything around is falling. It is callous disregard for
anything except one’s post.****
The work on the dams has not stopped. Instead of keeping your promise you
have had him put under virtual arrest in a hospital. ****
The basic tenet of honesty is that when you make a promise and throw the
weight of your chair behind it , you must fulfil it. We all have very
serious problems with what you are doing to the Ganges and I believe that
these projects will see the end of the Ganges in our lifetime. Not all of us
have families abroad – we need to survive and the end of the Ganges will
mean the end of India. Is that not something to be taken seriously ?****
Please release Swami Sanand from illegal police custody. If you want him to
stay alive keep your word for a change, stop construction and let him
participate in the meeting and present his point of view. If not, let him
be another martyr to your untruths in freedom and in his own space.****
Best wishes
