President Barack Obama's counter-terrorism advisor John Brennan spoke about the controversial topic in Washington on Monday.Brennan speech came near the anniversary of the 2011 US killing of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.
Brennan, speaking before a Washington think tank on Monday, says President Barack Obama wants to be more open with the American public a year after the raid that killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden. Navy SEALs killed bin Laden on May 2, 2011.
Brennan acknowledged targeted strikes against specific Al Qaeda terrorists, sometimes using remotely piloted drones. He said the attacks were necessary to prevent terrorist attacks on the United States.
Brennan defended the attacks as ethical and legal under US and international law. He said they dramatically reduce the danger to US personnel and innocent civilians.For first time that the Obama administration has formally acknowledged the use of drones, carried out by the Central Intelligence Agency in Pakistan and elsewhere.Media agencies
