Makar Sankranti_harvest festival


Makar Sankranti, the harvest festival, is being celebrated in different parts of the country with traditional fervour and enthusiasm today. The festival is known by various names in different states

It is known as Bhogali Bihu in Assam and West Bengal, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Sankranti in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and Uttarayan in Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Uttar Pradesh, a large number of people gathered at Sangam in Allahabad to take holy dip in the river Ganga on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. More from our correspondent:

 West Bengal, lakhs of people gathered at Gangasagar - the confluence of Bhagirathi and Bay of Bengal to take a holy dip.The President, the Vice President and the Prime Minister have greeted people on the occasion.
