Election Commission of India visit Manipur
The Election Commission reviewed election preparedness for the forthcoming Assembly elections in Manipur, during a visit to Imphal yesterday.
Following a meeting with the political parties, senior officers and all concerned, the Commission directed a series of measures for ensuring free, fair and peaceful elections in the State, where the date of polling is 28th January, 2012.
Among other measures, the Commission directed the change of the Director General of Police of the State. Based on the orders of the Commission, Shri Ratnakar Baral has taken over as the new Director General of Police yesterday.
The Commission also ordered that photograph of each and every voter will be taken at the Polling Stations after marking the indelible ink on their finger. This is the first time that such a provision has been introduced to avoid any bogus voting.
The Commission headed by Chief Election Commissioner, Dr. S.Y. Quraishi and accompanying Election Commissioners Shri V.S. Sampath and Shri H.S. Brahma reviewed the election preparations with all the District Administration and Police officers, Director General of Police and DGPs of the bordering States to ensure free, fair and peaceful polls. Security measures, logistics, infrastructure, border control, voters’ facilitation, expenditure control measures, transportation of men and material were among the issues discussed.
