Israel released over 550 Palestinian prisoners in the second and final phase of the prisoner’s swap deal with the Palestinian group Hamas. The Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida said in Gaza that the group has managed to get 20 percent of its prisoners released from Israeli jails in exchange for one soldier.
More than 500 were sent to the West Bank, which is ruled by the Fatah group led by the President Mahmoud Abbas. A large number of supporters and relatives greeted them in Ramallah. The remaining prisoners were brought from buses to Gaza.
Under the prisoner’ swap deal, Israel agreed to swap 1,027 prisoners for its soldier Gilad Schalit, who was in captivity in Gaza since June 2006. Schalit was released in October when Israel freed the first batch of 477 prisoners.
