A senior journalist working as Special Editor (Investigation) with an English tabloid in Mumbai was shot dead by four unidentified bike riders yesterday afternoon. Joint Police Commissioner (Law & Order) Rajnish Seth said that attackers fired five bullets on the 56 year old journalist Jyoti Dey from behind in Hiranandani areas of suburban Powai. He was rushed to nearby Hiranandani hospital where he was declared dead. State Chief Minister Prithvi Raj Chavan has condemned the incident.
Jyoti Dey extensively covered underworld and crime for over two decades. He also wrote a book titled 'Zero Dial' on the underworld. Dey covered the underworld in the turbulent 80s and 90s. Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil said, the government has taken this incident very seriously and senior police officials have been asked to make all out efforts to nab the culprits. State Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has condemned the incident.Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni condemning the killing of senior journalist Jyoti Dey described it as a sign of insanity perpetuated by mindless individuals in which innocent citizens are killeed.
The Mumbai commissioner of police, Arup Patnaik responded strongly to the murder of the senior Midday crime journalist, Jyoti Dey. Speaking to media persons, Arup Patnaik said that the culprits should be sharp shooters since most of the bullets fired by them have been fired in and around the chest of the victim. He added that the Mumbai Police will trace the culprits very soon. He further said that the crime branch of the Mumbai police, has formed three special squads and the local police has formed five police teams to catch hold of culprits of he murder.
Prime Minister's Media Advisor has termed it as shocking and unacceptable.
Journalist organizations in Mumbai have decided to organize a protest rally at Mantralaya on Monday. Press Club Mumbai has demanded immediate investigation and action against the culprits
