Obama : Funds significantly outraised by Romney

Naresh –
My upcoming birthday next week could be the last one I celebrate as President of the United States, but that’s not up to me — it’s up to you.
This July deadline is our most urgent yet, coming after two consecutive months of being significantly outraised by Romney and the Republicans.
And if you pitch in $3 or whatever you can before midnight tonight, you and a guest will be automatically entered to join me at my birthday get-together next month:

Thanks. Hope I’ll see you soon.

Dear friends,

A chemical leak in Bhopal killed 20,000 people, poisoned 500,000 and caused decades of disease and death. Justice could finally be served on the company responsible but only if our government admits the full scale of the disaster. An international outcry created this opportunity -- now sign the petition to ensure no victim is ignored.
A chemical leak in Bhopal killed 20,000 people, poisoned 500,000 and caused decades of disease and death -- now survivors have a real chance to get justice from the company responsible. But our government is working behind the scenes to help shield Dow Chemical from having to pay compensation to everyone affected. It's up to us to step in and bring victory to the victims.

It took weeks of public outcry to convince the government to target Dow at all for these crimes and now Home Affairs Minister Chidambaram is busy erasing almost 80% of the victims from the claim, drastically reducing the possible damages.

A public outcry forced the Minister to bring the case to court. Now lets pressure him to submit the accurate figures to the Supreme court so that all the victims get justice. Join the call and when we reach 50,000 signers we will take out a hard-hitting newspaper ad that will force his attention:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/justice_for_bhopal_i2/?bTfWiab&v=16564

The Bhopal chemical spill tragedy wrecked the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and scorched the earth for generations. Yet despite this historic destruction, no justice has been served. Union Carbide, the company in charge of the plant, dodged responsibility, then was bought by Dow Chemical who have also refused to pay out fair compensation to the victims still desperate for help dealing with the loss and destruction around them.

Now, after decades of fighting for justice and a big campaign to push the Indian government to act, the petition before the Indian Supreme Court will reopen the case – paving the way to compensation from Dow to the survivors. But accurately assessing the number of victims is key to ensuring every victim gets compensated if they win. Minister Chidambaram is responsible for a brief submitted to the court, that eliminated almost 80% of the victims as assessed by the Indian Council of Medical Research.

The Minister is likely working to protect Dow in order to keep India’s investment reputation. We can show him that justice is more important than bending the law to please big corporations! Click below to sign the petition and if we reach 50,000 signers, Avaaz will take this message directly to the morning newspaper that Minister Chidambaram reads:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/justice_for_bhopal_i2/?bTfWiab&v=16564

The Bhopal survivors need allies to win their decades long fight for justice, and we can answer their call. In the past, Avaaz has successfully stood with other communities under threat from multinational companies from Guatemala to the Ivory Coast. Now let’s support the victims of Bhopal in their final push for justice.

With hope,

Meredith, Iain, Alaphia, Pascal, Emma, Ricken and the rest of the Avaaz team

Is the Anna Campaign making an awareness campaign to weed out corruption:No

2012-07-26 06:06:47 - Nksagar-Sagar Media Inc: New Delhi:
Is the Anna Campaign making an awareness campaign to weed out corruption in the system,No: The eminent people in Anna's camp ought to be aware of the ccorrupt practices in our society which also needs to be corrected.Team Annas think tank is harping on one point of JLPB, the deate on this must continue but experts are of opinions that we as a society must stand firm to weed out corruption. Jail, punishment and other violent actions are against Gandhian philosophy. Leaders must quit their office, profession on their own if found deflected from their path of welfare and irregularities committed as prevalent in Japan, Europe and other developed countries.Leaders with black records must also be ostracized by the democratic institutions and society.

Team Anna sat on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar

Team Anna has launched their indefinite fast in New Delhi on Wednesday, raising the pitch against the UPA government on the issue of corruption.

Anna Hazare's three close aides -- Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai -- sat on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar here while the 74-year-old activist is on a dharna.

Hazare has served an ultimatum that he will wait for the government to take a decision on their demands in the next four days or else he will join his colleagues on fast from Sunday.

Before reaching the protest venue, Hazare and his team members went to Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi.

As he arrived on the stage
erected at Jantar Mantar, Hazare raised slogans like 'Inqulab Zindabad' and 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' as his supporters waved the tricolour.
The protesters demand a strong Lokpal, setting up of a special team to probe corruption allegations against 15 Union Ministers, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, setting up of a fast track court to try criminal cases against MPs and SIT looking into allegations against party chiefs. On Tuesday, Hazare and his team spoke in different voices on the indefinite fast with the activist asserting that it is for Lokpal Bill while his aides said it is limited to their three demands.
Team Anna indefinite anshan at Jantar Mantar

Is the Anna Campaign making an awareness campaign to weed out corruption in the system and the eminent people in Anna's camp ought to be aware of the ccorrupt practices in our society which also needs to be corrected.Team Annas think tank is harping on one point of JLPB, the deate on this must continue but experts are of opinions that we as a society must stand firm to weed out corruption.

However the Team Annas press release is as follows: Seen in the sea of people were thousands in Anna cap , singing patriotic songs and thus started the fervid campaign of Team Anna at Jantar Mantar this morning, the movement of people against corruption and inefficiency in government and its cadres. Coincidently today Pranab Mukerjee, one of the key accused as claimed by team Anna, in Submarine AND Rice export scams, also took office as the 13th president of the nation. People from all walks of life, young and old, men and women, children and college going students turnout to see the uproar in the massive gathering , in the sweltering heat of the Sun and managing day’s life with basic minimal amenities such as water and food. Speakers, one by one, mocked at the long and old history of incompetence, lethargy , corrupt practices and lawless governance ruling the country for last 63 years of independence which many call “rule by the black foreigners”.
Amazing was the enthusiasm shown by people sitting on open road, singing patriotic songs and cheering team Anna. Sunil Lal, a team member has converted the Jan Lok Pal bill in 16 languages including Marathi, Gujarati, and Punjabi etc for the common people to understand what it means to them. Another supporter, col Devender Sehrawat raised the issue of farmers and minimum support price and how the governments, one after another, have ignored farmer’s interest to plunder their lands offering minimum prices and colluding with the business groups. This has happened while the lame “land acquisition act” has been pending like a ping pong ball in the governments and judiciary. The unaccountability in government offices was clearly imaginable when people talked about countracts worth Rs 50 lacs being sanctioned but only Rs 3 lacs was spent on actual development , remaining amount being shared between politicians and business goons. This is a naked truth we see when we compare the quality of roads and hospitals and schools and us and what we see in private institutions which have become rampant machines to loot the common man. Rightly someone pointed out as in “Pan Singh Tomar”- only guns are left in Chambal, all dacoits now sit in Delhi. Speakers also talked about how political parties resort to illegal and unethical practices for seeing vote by offering money and other lures to gullible voters.
Suman Lal Jain,(95), an associate of Vinoba Bhave and friend of Anna also joined to show his support for the national cause of eliminating graft and corruption from the country. Fodder cam, 2G scam, CWG, Coalgate and what not- all came as topics of reference for the speakers who mocked at callousness shown by the top leadership of all political parties who have ruled the nation ever after independence and nothing has come to the common man who has attuned to live without water, power , healthcare and other basic things of life.

Thousands of people turned up to support the campaign. The gathering was addressed by Anna, Kiran Bedi, Manish Sisodia, Gopal Rai, Prashant Bhushan and Arvind Kejriwal. Kumar Vishwas and Sanjay Singh managed the stage. Also present were Shanti Bhushan, Sunita Godara, Devinder Sharma and Akhil Gogoi.

In many places in India, Anshankaris were not allowed to hold peaceful protests and were detained. In Kolkata, some people were arrested as a huge crowd of protestors gathered around the Central Lock-up, Lal Bazar. In Pune, volunteers of India Against Corruption were arrested while in Mumbai 50 activists protesting were peacefully arrested. Around 8 buses from Bhatinda carrying 1000 supporters was stopped from entering Delhi.

People from various cities across the country are expected to arrive in Jantar Mantar tomorrow. This includes people from all four districts of Sikkim who will come to Delhi all the way from their home state. One of them is Mr YT Lepcha who will also sit on indefinite fast.
Around 400 people started an indefinite anshan at Delhi today.

People from places like Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are pouring in to lend their support to the Janlokpal Bill. A street play group from Palwal also performed a play on corruption called – Dhritrashtra ka Darbar. Even in the sweltering heat, people from all age groups, castes and regions of the country are lending enthusiastic support to the fight led by Anna Hazare. A 95-year old freedom fighter who had also taken active part in JP andolan had come all the way from Agra to support India Against Corruption. In a small UP-Bihar border village of Sitab Deara, JP Narayan's 87-year old brother KC Verma and his wife also sat on an indefinite anshan.

Roaring ‘Vande Matram’ and ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ those who couldn’t join the fast at Delhi are lending their support from their native places by organizing anshans there.

Towards the evening, Arvind Kejriwal and Prashant Bhushan explained the charges on 5 out of the 15 ministers against whom an independent SIT is being demanded. These ministers were Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, newly elected President Pranab Mukherjee, Virbhadra Singh, Kapil Sibal and P. Chidambaram. Before starting explanation of charges on each of the 5 ministers, the crowd was asked how many felt that the respective minister was corrupt. Barring a few, all hands went up in the air followed by a loud roar.

The coalgate scam involving Prime Minister was discussed in detail. The allegations on Pranab over the rice export scam where the Ghana govt had raised serious allegations against the then External Affairs Minister currently the President Pranab Mukherjee was also discussed along with the Navy War room leak case.
For details of the charges on each of the Ministers, pls visit our website www.indiaagainstcorruption.org.

Referring to Ambika Soni's statement that a defamation case would be filed against Team Anna members, Arvind Kejriwal dared the govt to file the case.

Annaji in his address said after seeing the number of youth gathered at the venue he felt like a 75-year youth. He said that what the Britishers could not loot in 150 years, our politicians have looted after we gained our Independence. He also said that even though the PM had agreed on 3 demands - Citizen Charter, Lower Bureaucracy and Lokayukta - the govt did not fulfil its promise.

Arvind Kejriwal challenged the NSUI who allegedly tried to create ruckus at the gathering this morning, by inviting them for sharing their thoughts rather than engaging in destructive and anti- social activities. He sought involvement and support from young Indians to further this national cause and improve the state of affairs in the nation. He promised to expose 15 corrupt politicians who are MPs and this list included PM Manmohan Singh, Pranab Mukerjee and many others. Speakers from many prominent parties and groups spoke including Imam Council of India.

Bangladesh Leaders Congratulates Pranab

Bangladesh's top leadership today congratulated Pranab Mukherjee on his election as India's President and expressed optimism that Indo-Bangla relations would grow further under his "direction".In separate letters to Mukherjee, President M Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina wished him a successful tenure at the highest office of India. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar congratulated Pranab Mukherjee for his victory in the presidential poll. He also requested Mukherjee to undertake a visit to Bihar shortly.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today congratulated President-elect Pranab Mukherjee on his victory in the presidential polls and exuded hope that the veteran leader, with decades of experience in public life, would provide guidance to the government and the country.

DMK president M Karunanidhi today greeted Pranab Mukherjee on his win in the Presidential election, saying Mukherjee secured majority of the votes because he was a "good democrat" and an "administrator".

West Bengal, Mukherjee's home state voted overwhelmingly in his favour giving him 275 of the 294 votes with a value of 41525. CPI and RSP had abstained from voting. Sangma polled three votes with a value of 453. Four votes were invalid.Mithai shops must be running out of sandesh.

Pranab Mukherjee has called up Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray and Janata Dal - United chief Sharad Yadav for supporting him in the Presidential poll.

Both Shiv Sena and JD-U, members of the NDA, had supported Pranab against the wishes of the BJP,

PA Sangma gives his thanksgiving speech for those who gave him support  -- particularly Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa and Orissa CM Navin Patnaik -- who were the first to nominate his candidature.
"I wish Pranab Mukherjee success. I may have lost the elections, but India has lost the opportunity to elect a tribal to the highest post in the country. The poll process has been partisan and a code of conduct is needed," says Sangma. His vote count stands at 257466. Referring to the overwhelming support for Pranab in north-east states, Sangma says the people of north-east are no more capable of standing on their feet. The people are totally dependent on the Centre, says Sangma.

Fauja Singh aged 101,inspiring run in Olympic Torch relay

Punjab-born Fauja Singh, who defies age to run marathons, drew the loudest cheers on Saturday as the Olympic Torch was carried by him, Olympic medal winners and leading individuals through London amidst a welcome clear sky and sunshine.
Clad in all-white apparel and a matching white turban, the sprightly Singh carried the torch accompanied by hundreds of admirers, including Sikhs with yellow T-shirts bearing Singh’s image, who hailed him every moment of the distance he travelled.
Singh was born in 1911, and began running at 86 to keep himself occupied.
He has since set several records for people of his age, running six London marathons, two Canada marathons and the New York marathon.
Clearly a bit of a sensation for his achievements, his participation in the relay on Saturday was described by admirers and onlookers as “a moment of history”.
Singh, who carried the Olympics Torch in Athens eight years ago, now wants to carry it before the 2016 Olympics too, when he will be 105.
Hundreds of Sikhs organised a ‘langar’ at 16 points along the torch relay route to celebrate Fauja Singh’s efforts.
The torch from Greenwich to Waltham Forest was carried by several Olympians, including Nadia Comaneci, and Indian-origin individuals who have excelled in various fields, such as Kaushali Trivedi (23), Natasha Sinha (15), Priya Rajgor (20) and Dhrashti Shah (16).
The relay’s youngest and oldest (Fauja Singh) were among the 143 torch-bearers on Saturday.
The youngest was Chester Chambers, 12, who was nominated for representing his classmates, fundraising and helping to develop an anti-bullying campaign.
Saturday was the first day of the Olympics torch’s seven-day tour of London in the final countdown to the Games.
Hopes that the constant rains of the last few weeks will give way to sunshine during the Olympics were realised, as Saturday’s relay was held amidst a clear sky.
United Sikhs, the charity organisation that organised the ‘langar’, distributed thousands of ‘roti rolls’ along the torch relay route.
The ‘langar’ was held to “celebrate the wonderful achievements of this under-spoken treasure of the Sikh community”, organisers said.
Parvinder Kaur, manager of the ‘langar’ project, said: “We are proud to share with the public the 500-year-old Sikh tradition of serving free meals to celebrate the carrying of the Olympic Torch by Bhai Fauja Singh”.

The response received from their secretary clearly indicates that they do not have jurisdiction in offering exemptions to FSQ, CSA & FIFA regulations,” said Sukhwinder Singh, Director of United Sikhs, which launched the campaign. “We have made it clear to the president that this decision is against the basic principles of human rights and is hence a violation of the Canadian Charter of Rights.”
The decision was taken a few weeks ago and they have not only banned these aspiring players to play but also went a step further and canceled their registration and returned their registration money. Feedback from the local community of Quebec indicated that there haven’t been any such issues in the past.
Australia has decided to offer additional work options for Indian students to help them tide over impact of depreciation of rupee against dollar. As value of rupee has fallen to a record low against dollar, Indian students are forced to shell out more money to meet living cost abroad.
Indian students enrolled in postgraduate and doctoral research programs at Australian universities will now be able to work as faculty, assist research programs, work in the libraries, laboratories and other avenues in the universities itself. Graduate students will also be permitted to work more hours so that they can earn money to support their living expenses.
Earlier, students could work only limited number of hours because the accepted policy was to allow them to focus more on studies. David Holly, consul general for South India, Australian Consulate told, “We are going to provide flexible work options for postgraduate and research students. They will be able to work for an unlimited number of hours per week during their studies.”
According to visa statistics, depreciation of rupee against dollar has not impacted the flow of students to Australia. There are 70,000 Indian students in Australia. There is a 10 per cent increase in the number of Indian students who have enrolled in universities in Victoria where nine top universities of Australia is located.

Subject: Demand to Government to ROLL BACK Marriage Law (Amendment) Bill 2010, which proposes to introduce a policy of “automatic property annexation” from men in the name of “No Fault Divorce”

The Marriage Law (Amendment) Bill, 2010 Bill proposes to introduce “Irretrievable Breakdown of Marriage”, as a ground for divorce, in the Hindu Marriage Act. The most salient features of this bill are that spouses do not have to prove reasons like cruelty or adultery etc to get a divorce. Men and women can apply divorce citing Irretrievable Breakdown of Marriage. The husband however cannot oppose the divorce, if filed by wife and would be forced to give his wife, half of husband’s residential property acquired before or after marriage. The Marriage Law (Amendment) Bill, 2010 Bill, is comparable to the infamous British “Doctrine of Lapse” as it proposes to introduce a policy of ‘automatic property annexation’, this time from Indian men under the innocent guise of “Irretrievable Breakdown of Marriage”.

What will happen if?

  1. Husband purchases a property just 6 months before marriage out of his hard-earned savings, and his marriage breaks and he loses half of the property. In that case the husband, his mother and his unmarried sisters will be doomed.
  2. Men start fearing this law and stop buying real estate which adversely affects the economy of the country.
  3. Husband has dependent parents and owns a single property and if 50% of that goes to wife post-divorce, how will the husband take care of his old parents and unmarried sisters? Is the concept of family restricted to only husband-wife in the Indian context?
  4. What, if the family is a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) owning a single joint property? Will the wife get 50% of that? What about other sibling’s share in it?

In short, this amendment if passed will exponentially increase divorce rates of young people. To make the matters worse, men will still be made to pay maintenance to wives from their monthly income even after he is ripped off all his savings, assets and property. He will lose whatever left in running around courts paying lawyer fees. Ironically, this law will not help any poor woman and the planning commission’s women’s empowerment group wants Government to pay money to poor women, who get divorced due to this law!!

Save Family Foundation (SFF) and its partner NGOs have more than 30,000 members and they are the fronts of over 20 lakh men and women in India and NRIs, who are suffering from enactment of undemocratic badly drafted laws. SFF DEMANDS the government to ROLL BACK the Marriage Law (Amendment) Bill 2010. The bill is being “forced” under pressure to be made law “without” taking into consideration the public opinion or the recommendations of either the Men’s NGOs or even the Advisory committee.
The reasons why Save Family Foundation demands the Roll-back of these proposed amendments is for the following reasons:

1.      India does not need “No Fault Divorce” Law. This law is appropriate for Western Societies, not for Indian society. Rollback Irretrievable Breakdown of Marriage Bill.

2.      If this “No Fault Divorce law” is passed, then it will rapidly increase divorces in India, because it will enrich women, who marry men having property/assets and divorce them soon after marriage. If a woman gets half of husband’s owned property within a month of her marriage, then a large majority of marriages will break soon after honeymoon. Please note, according to this disgusting proposed law, husband’s property will be divided whether purchased before or after marriage.

3.      The wife can claim 50% of the residential property of the husbands, unopposed, leaving the aged Hindu mother, father, unmarried sister of the husband in the lurch, irrespective of whether the property was acquired before or after the marriage. This Bill also preaches that it is more profitable to break a marriage early, as unlike in other civilized countries, in India, the duration of Hindu marriage will have no link to the wife’s share, as in any case, she can claim 50% of the property, even if the duration of marriage was only one month. 50% of any person’s property cannot be automatically annexed by the government just because two people cannot cohabit with each other and remain married.

4.      The wife can also claim, unopposed a major share of the husband’s other movable property too, whether acquired before or after the marriage, ignoring the basic fact that a Hindu Man, also has the duty to take care of his aged parents and unmarried sisters. Strangely this Bill preaches that, it would be more profitable for women to break their family, rather than staying in it, as the married lady who stays in marriage, will not get share of property of her husband. She would get the share ONLY if she breaks her family. Such Laws will increase in family disharmony, and corresponding increase in crime rate including spousal murders

Such women activists claim, that the wife should get that share, against which she had contributed, during the subsistence of marriage. However, these very women fail to justify, what is the contribution of a wife on the property of husband, which was acquired BEFORE the marriage?

5.      The Bill is being “forced” into becoming a law in an “unknown” haste keeping aside the Public View or Advises of the Advisory Committee or that of the recommendations of the Men’s NGOs.

6.      The proposed structure of the Bill is totally Anti-Husband, Anti Mother-Sister and Anti-Family.

7.      As, per the proposed bill, the husband CANNOT challenge the divorce petition filed by his wife, based on ground of grave financial hardship which is a gross violation against the principal of natural justice.

8.      Media reports also talk about division of ONLY Husband’s property being treated as Marital property. Public is failing to understand why is Wife’s Assets not part of Marital Property. The proposed bill does not cover the Assets made by a wife either before or during marriage. Women’s assets build happens more in personal use items like Gold / Jewellery etc. while Men invest more into the family assets like House / Car etc. So with the proposed bill, the one who thinks for complete family is being penalized while the assets built from family earning into personal items like gold / jewellery go untouched.

9.      Media’s reports on inclusion of the Moveable or Immoveable assets of the Husband irrespective of being bought / created during or before marriage are being forced into the division. This is spreading a wide-spread emergency panic into the hearts of Indian men who are now thinking of not getting married at all.

10.  The proposed bill leaves question of Custody of the Children un-answered leaving their future of Parenting in COMPLETE DARK.

11.  With the proposed bill, in name of use of Section 15(3) of the Constitution of India, Section 15(1) is under complete violation when it does not allow one gender (male) to contest his own case. The Bill curtails the fundamental Rights to Equality before Law as granted by Constitution to every Citizen.

“Doctrine of Lapse” act has already led to panic in the nation

·         Since the time the newspapers have been filled by the stories of automatic property annexation under the guise of Irretrievable Breakdown of Marriage, panic calls from families have stated to flood in.  Young professionals, who have taken huge loans to buy property, are the hardest hit, if 50% of their property goes to wife during divorce that also purchased before marriage. Most of them are on a “Cancellation Spree” after the cabinet decision to give property of husbands to wives.
·         Lenders and Banks are also worried with sudden increase on their funded properties which are under home loan to married men as their loan amount will be at risk if the couple is going through divorce, directly affecting the GDP because of the increase in NPA and hence, the economy of our country.

This Bill is also against the principle of natural justice and is against the basis of Supreme Court Judgment of “Naveen Kohli Vs Neelu Kohli” which is the basis of Irretrievable Breakdown of Marriage.  In that case the wife had filed 14 cases against husband. Husband also filed 3 cases one of which was adultery. Supreme Court saw that for last 10 years cases is going on & there is no chance that the husband & wife are going to live together & passed a divorce decree. If this present Bill becomes a law, then people like Naveen Kohli won’t get any justice even in Supreme Court as this law overrules the SC judgment saying if the wife objects, then the husband can’t get divorce, even under such circumstances.

Demands

·         Our foremost demand is for the government to immediately STOP AND REPEAL THE PROCESSING OF THIS PROPERTY ANNEXATION BILL.
·         Save Family Foundation along with other NGOs are unanimously answering the public outrage and the fear of basic human rights of men, with a nation-wide protest against the Marriage Law (Amendment) Bill 2010 to put our demands to the government for immediate roll-back of this amendment bill.
To support our legitimate demands, Save Family Foundation and other allied NGOs are currently lobbying with the various MPs and have sent protest letters, to the Prime Minister, Law Minister and all other MPs highlighting our concerns. We are also sending letters to FICCI, AASOCHAM, various banks and real estate companies highlighting our concern. With this Press Conference, we would request our media friends to take our voice to the various authorities, so that appropriate justice is meted to the husband, wife, children and the family.
INDIA WILL BE PROTESTING AGAINST THIS BILL ON 18th AUGUST 2012

New Delhi /20 July 12:Violence against women for exercising their right to choice in a relationship is on the increase throughout the country.  Governments must fulfill their responsibilities to protect women and punish the perpetrators .Last year the media reported 139  cases in Uttar Pradesh (UP) alone of violence against women for  exercising  their right to choice in relationships . In 103 cases, either the woman or her partner or both were killed.  The perpetrators were  family members or rejected suitors. This scenario is not unique to UP but is reflective of the situation in the entire country.  Last month in the capital, a Municipal Corporation of Delhi school teacher was allegedly killed by her brother and mother for exercising her right to choice.
The Association for Advocacy and Legal Initiatives (AALI) a feminist legal advocacy group, based in Lucknow  today released, “ The Legal Compendium,Judgments on the Right to Choice and Decision making in a Relationship”.This  is a compilation of about 80 judgments of the Supreme Court and High
Courts  which have upheld women’s right to choice in relationships and punished the perpetrators of violence

. These judgments were compiled in an effort to remind governments of their responsibilities to protect women who exercise their right to sexual autonomy.  The Supreme Court in a landmark judgment in   Lata Singh Vs State of UP , in  2006  directed the police and administration to ensure that if any boy or girl who is a major and undergoes inter-caste or inter-religious marriages are not harassed. It further directed the authorities to take action against those who subject them to threats or acts of violence.More recently , in 2011 in the case Arumugam Servai Vs State of Tamil Nadu, the Supreme Court further directed the State governments to suspend the District Magistrate /Collector  and SSP/SPs  of the district if they do not prevent or take action against “honor killings” .  The compendium is also a documentation of the range of violence a woman faces when she exercises her right to enter or exit a relationship . The cases in the compendium demonstrates that women’s decision making in matters related to sexual autonomy is a  “human rights issue”.
Renu Mishra from AALI said that protection and promotion of women’s right to choice in a relationship is central to the organization’s struggle for establishing women’s human rights.

Every year AALI   intervenes in about 52 cases of right to choice . The organization expects to face opposition from the community but the real problem is when the police and the lower judiciary ignore and violate basic legal and constitutional provisions. The often heard refrain from the police and even judiciary is “Aukat se bahar ja kar kaam karoge toh yahi hoga” . To illustrate this point AALI screened a short video of an inter-religious marriage where the adult girl belonging to a Hindu family and whose father was a policeman was forced by the judicial magistrate  to go back to her parents despite giving a statement that she did not want to live with her parents.

AALI also released a second publication “Control and Freedom: Women and the age of sexual decisions”.
This analyses the constitutional provisions and different laws impacting age of consent to sexual relationships. It also illustrates how the differential treatment when a girl below the age of consent exercises her right to choice and when families get girls below the age of consent married.   The author of the research paper, Ms Geeta Ramaseshan an advocate at Madras High Court and a renowned human rights activist said “The publication addresses the complex area of right to choice of women and indicates how the criminal law is often used and misused to deny these rights.” The Chief Guest of the event Justice A.P. Shah (Retd) released the publications in the presence of members of civil society and press and addressed the gathering.  He said that there is inherent bias against women in the police and some sections of the judiciary.  He also said that
most families even in cities are reluctant to leave decision making to the women.
